How to Obtain Your Texas Fishing License Before Your Trip

Before heading out to the beautiful waters of the Lower Laguna Madre with Fin-natic Charters, it is essential to ensure you are properly licensed. In Texas, anyone aged 17 years or older must possess a valid fishing license to fish in public waters, including both freshwater and saltwater environments. Because our trips take place in coastal bays, all adult anglers are required to have a license that includes a saltwater endorsement.

For visitors planning a quick getaway, we highly recommend the non-resident All-Water Fishing License. This option is incredibly convenient as it covers both freshwater and saltwater fishing across the entire state. If you are only in South Padre Island for a short trip, you can also purchase a One-Day or short-term All-Water license, which is a budget-friendly and efficient choice for travelers. Residents of Texas also have access to various annual packages, including senior discounts for those aged 65 and older.

You can easily obtain your license through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) online portal, which allows you to store a digital copy directly on your mobile device—perfect for showing your credentials once you reach the dock. If you prefer a physical copy, licenses are available at hundreds of retailers throughout Texas, including sporting goods stores, major department stores, and various bait and tackle shops near South Padre Island. We encourage all guests to purchase their license before the day of their trip to ensure a seamless and stress-free start to our adventure together.

Regarding exemptions, youth anglers under the age of 17 are not required to hold a fishing license in Texas, making it easy for families to bring their children along for the experience. Certain seniors—specifically Texas residents born before January 1, 1931—are also exempt. If you are a resident of Louisiana or Oklahoma aged 65 or older, you may qualify for specific exemptions depending on your home state’s recreational fishing license. Whatever your situation, our team is committed to helping you navigate these requirements so you can focus entirely on the excitement of your upcoming day on the water.
